During our first week in school we formed a Classroom Community where everyone understands and practices Our Agreements. As a class, we defined what each of the Agreements meant and gave examples of what is acceptable behavior and what is not acceptable behavior. These Agreements were adopted by the entire school. The following is a list of the Agreements that each child is expected to follow.
Our Agreements:
1. Mutual Respect
2. Attentive Listening
3. Appreciations/No Put Downs
4. Right to Pass/Right to Participate
During our first week of school we also started some of our core curriculum! So far we have read a story called The Pumpkin Runner which helped us to review our basic reading strategies to help us become better readers. The following is a list of the reading strategies that we can use any time we read a story:
1. Predict/Infer
2. Phonics/Decoding
3. Monitor/Clarify
4. Question
5. Summarize
6. Evaluate
We are also currently reading a book as a class called Because of Winn-Dixie. We will take an AR test on this as a class when we are finished and then watch the movie!
In math we started Unit 1: Basic Multiplication and Division. We are continually practicing our basic facts. This is very important to improve speed and accuracy! We are also remembering how to set up and solve our own multiplication and division story problems. Students will receive math homework almost on a daily basis and it is strongly encouraged that they complete it in order for the daily concepts to be remembered and practiced.
In social studies Ms. Gross asked the question, "Where are we?" Ask your student the following questions:
1. What continent do we live on?
2. What country?
3. What state?
bonus: In what two hemispheres do we live?
Students took their first continent/ocean quiz.
Mrs. Winters began working on the writing process with the students and for science students were involved with two experiments- "An Empty Cup" (which showed us that air takes up space) and "An Ocean of Air" (which showed us that air has weight).
